Modern Japanese Living

3/6/10

While I’m on the topic of home, allow me to give you a tour of the house and some insights to modern Japanese living. Glenn and Mari’s house is pretty nice for a Japanese home. It has mostly Western furniture and is really quite comfortable.

When you first walk in the door, you have to take your shoes off before you step any further into the house. This is consistent with all Japanese homes.

To the right of the entrance hall is the living room/dining room/kitchen area, which is also connected to Glenn, Mari, and Emily’s bedrooms.

To the left of the entrance hall is Glenn’s home office, and straight ahead is the toilet. In Japan, the toilet is separate from the rest of the bathroom, and anyone using it has to put on special slippers that never leave the toilet room. And get this: The toilet seat is heated. Yeah, you read that right.

My absolute favorite part of modern Japanese living is bathing. There is a whole separate room that has a shower and a bathtub. Japanese bathing is a little different than it is in America. First thing you do is take a shower. You sit on the stool provided for you and use the hand-held showerhead to wash your hair and body. The bowl there is filled with warm water that you can dump over your head to warm yourself up.

Once you’re all clean, you hop into the tub, which is already filled with warm water and just soak. It’s like wrapping yourself up in a heated blanket and settling down for a snooze. Personally, I think everyone should bathe this way.

Up the stairs is my room. It’s very small, but I find it comfortably cozy. My bed is a futon placed on the floor, which is surprisingly very comfortable given that you’re sleeping on the floor.

And so for now I leave you with Chibi-chan, Glenn and Mari’s cat. I have more pictures that you can see on my Photobucket account, so please enjoy. Until next time~
